Harvesting heroes

Our Glorious Cotswolds Grasslands team does an amazing job of bringing a beautiful mix of wildflowers back to fields across the Cotswolds.

They do this by using local seed collected from a network of flower-rich ‘donor’ sites across the Cotswolds. Every year, we use our trusty seed harvesters to gather this seed. These hard-working machines are slowly towed along behind our vehicles. As they go, their rotating brushes gently knock seed off the grasses and flowers, and feed it into a hopper.

Once the hopper is full, the contents are emptied onto a tarpaulin, and sifted by hand by our GCG team members and their volunteers. Sorted seed is collected, dried, and made ready for sowing a few months later, across recipient sites.

It’s all quite a process, often in the hot summer weather, and it requires a lot of hard work from our team and volunteers – and not least from our seed harvesters. And so, we want to honour these hardy machines with names that are a little more imaginative than Harvester 1, 2 and 3!

Can you help us do right by them and give them better, more fitting and heroic names? You’ll be helping us build anticipation for the wildflower seed harvesting season.

Head on over to our Instagram and Facebook to creative and comment some names! You can suggest as many names as you like – the more, the merrier!
