From Egypt Through Rome to Windsor

Back to Guided Walks page

We follow the old railway line from Nailsworth to North Woodchester. Turning uphill, we visit the site of a Roman villa, and return via South Woodchester and Windsoredge. Most of the walk is along quiet lanes. There are three off-road sections which are relatively steep and can be muddy.

A varied circular walk, with history stretching back to the Iron Age and beyond. The old railway line follows the valley of the Nailsworth Stream, with its centuries-old mill buildings and woods rich in birdsong. North Woodchester is the site of an internationally famous Roman villa, now nestling amid the tombstones of the medieval St. Mary’s church. Its Victorian successor is one of the finest churches of that period in the Cotswolds. The return route southwards along the valley slopes offers many fine views of the valley below, as well as the slopes of Rodmarton and Minchinhampton Commons, and the newly-built Great Wardens’ Wall. There are several fine Georgian and Victorian houses, as well as humbler plaques and monuments to men who died in the service of their country in the First World War. Egypt Mill, at the start and end of the walk, has a fine café-bar. Image by Phil Taylor.
