Mickleton around Meon Fort
A circular walk from Mickleton and around Meon Hill on the Heart of England Way and then to Hidcote Manor on the Monarch’s Way.
We meet in Mickleton by the church of St Lawrence where we can visit the grave of Victor Joseph De Martelaere, a Belgian soldier (more about him on the day). We then circumnavigate Meon Hill where the remains of an Iron Age fort are visible. We also learn about the longest unsolved murder of the Warwickshire police – the murder of Charles Walton which was linked to witchcraft! We then carry on to Hidcote Manor and on to Kiftsgate Court where we learn about three women gardeners over the years who are responsible for the superb gardens there. Bring coffee/snack.
This walk is organised by Cotswold Voluntary Wardens, the voluntary arm of the Cotswolds Conservation Board. These walks offer an interesting and often entertaining way of exploring our wonderful Cotswold countryside and landscape. All walks by the Voluntary Wardens are FREE OF CHARGE however donations are welcome and help us to take care of the countryside.
PLEASE: always remember to wear appropriate footwear because some walks may be steep and muddy in places. Dogs are not allowed on walks, except guide dogs and hearing dogs. It is advisable to check the website or call the Cotswolds Conservation Board (07841 663607) beforehand for details of any changes, particularly during bad weather.
